The moments following an auto accident can be confusing and hectic.  Not only are the parties involved having to process what just took place, they must also make split-second decisions of what to do next due to both possible injuries and non-drivable vehicles

Here are some core steps every person should remember and utilize if the need arises:

- Call the police.  One party (usually the one at fault), may ask that the police not be called or assert that, given the venue of the accident (e.g. a parking lot), the police will not come to the scene. This is not always true and you should call the police and have the dispatcher decide if your accident warrants a response or not.  Moreover, if you choose not to phone the authorities, your insurance company may inquire of you why you didn’t.

- Check for immediate injuries. This can and should be done simultaneously while on the phone with the authorities.  Keep in mind, though one may not be immediately injured, injuries can manifest themselves days later.  Just make sure that they are related to the accident. Injuries reported days and weeks after an accident, can be subject to increase scrutiny by your insurance company and the carrier for the other party (if applicable).

-- Assess damages to both yours and the other parties’ vehicle (if applicable).  Taking pictures is very helpful.  Two to four pictures of the other vehicle is sufficient (if applicable) and at least 5-10 photos of your car. Be sure to take pictures from all angles; even those areas that aren't damaged. This will prevent either party from being accused of creating pre-existing damages.

-- Report the claim to your insurance company immediately, regardless of fault.  This will show due diligence on your part and will allow your carrier to be proactive on your behalf in the case of a  word-vs.-word  collision.

These tips are a handy guide, and will allow you to navigate the beginning days of your claim smoothly.

Note:  All insurance policies are different and have different requirements for reporting an automobile loss.  Please direct all questions specific to your situation to your insurance company or agent. Have all injuries evaluated by a competent medical professional.
